I have been using this homemade natural air freshener for a while and am very happy with it. I keep it in my toilet and it is really efficient!

Natural air freshener recipe

I had this idea of making my own natural air freshener when I used up the one I had. Screening the ingredient list, I could read:

more than 30% of water, less than 5% solvents, perfume, preservative

Well, that does not help much, right?…. but I think it practically means something like:

92% of water, 5% solvent, 2% perfume, 1% preservative

I know that alcohol has an affinity to both water and oils and is therefore a good natural alternative to use as solvent.

I was not much in mood to calculate a recipe – sometimes I like to make things by eye… so I tried the following:

1/2 teaspoon lavender essential oil

1/2 teaspoon lemongrass essential oil

3 teaspoons – vodka (or other alcohol)

water to fill the 8.5 oz / 200 ml bottle

The alcohol serves to dissolve the essential oils in the water.

Mix all the ingredients directly in the bottle. Shake well before each use, as the quantity of the alcohol does not completely dissolve essential oils.

I therefore searched some instructions or guidelines or recipes which would give me an idea, what would be the best proportion of alcohol/water to dissolve essential oils, I found in an article on perfumes the following formulation:

Formulation Type

Fragrance or
Essential Oil

Distilled Water
or Distillate

Room or Linen Sprays

20% to 30%

63% to 77%

The page says that the Formulator’s alcohol stands for a mix of SD40B alcohol, propylene glycol and isopropyl alcohol

well, these are maybe better solvents than our ethylalcohol (e.g. vodka), but nevertheless, it is an indicator that in order to completely dissolve essential oil, we would need in our recipe at least 1.7oz (50ml) of strong >70% alcohol and even more of 50% vodka.

I frankly do not think this is necessary, I am ok to shake the bottle each time before use.

Having a purely natural air freshener – that’s worthy the effort, or not?
